Peter Tatchell...

Post by max_tranmere »

I saw on Sky News that he turned up to barrack the BNP leader Nick Griffin today. He previously yelled abuse at the Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe, tried to arrest him himself (?), and was punched unconcious by one of Mugabe's bodyguards.

I remember a few things about Peter Tatchell that he probably would hope people had forgotten. He stood for the Labour Party at the 1983 General Election in Bermonsey and Southwark in south London and managed to lose them what was a safe seat.

In those days, before Neil Kinnock brought the party into line and either expelled hard-left cranks or didn't let them join, the Labour Party had all kinds of people standing for it. Graffiti appeared all over that part of south London, in huge letters, saying "PETER TATCHELL IS A COMMUNIST POOF".

The Labour party's annihilation at the 1983 Election, where they were even less popular after 4 years in opposition than they had been whilst in Government (and that is some achievement!) was helped by people like him.

Today we see him howling abuse at Nick Griffin. I wonder what he'll be doing next.

Don't you think it is good to yell abuse at Nick Griffin? And who would try and make a citizen's arrest on the tyrant Mugabe? It would take a braver man than me...

I think it was good that he yelled at Griffin, and Mugabe is a tyrant of epic proportions and I think it was courageous of him to try and arrest him - even though he had zero chance of pulling it off. What I thought was strange today was that after Tatchell heckled Griffin, he (Tatchell) said to the TV cameras that in a democracy someone who is elected has the right to attend a Buckingham Palace garden party if asked. So he was also speaking in favour of Griffin going, when he had just shouted him down. As I have said on other threads here over recent times, Griffin has a mandate from the people as he received a lot of votes in the European elections - Tatchell was one of the least popular people ever to stand in a British election.

I'd readily buy him a pint. He seems a decent bloke dedicated to fighting for what he believes in.

I think there is a difference between bravery and stupidity, and I don't think the pratt is brave.
