I was just listening to the local radio station and they had yet another 'nutrition expert' (with a book to flog of course) outlining a list of things you absolutely mustn't eat. He listed virtually everything that has ever been considered food as utterly bad for you - including fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy products, all meat, fish, eggs, juices, seaweed, roots, sprouts and anything edible! He forgot to mention what it was exactly you COULD eat, but I guess the point was to convince you to buy his book as, if you've ever eaten anything, you'll soon be dead without his help.
This leads me to wonder this:-
If mankind has evolved over millions of years and had to develop the ability to survive on simply anything available (that their digestive system could handle), then it stands to reason that our bodies are actually quite tough and, while living on Maccas won't help you much, living on a reasonable variety of pretty basic foods is probably as good as anything. It's probably quite unusual for our bodies to handle foods from all over the world every day. I'm always wary of people trying to shove some horrid looking thing into my mouth telling me "Oh try these. They're hippopotamus balls in penguin vomit sauce. They're really tasty!"
If they're so yummy, I'll let them have mine.
Also, how come most people who follow strict 'health' regimes look absolutely awful and usually die before they're 50. I reckon the psychological benefit of having the occasional 'nosh-up' din-din outweighs any harm it might do. It's all in my new book - 'The BGAFD Supermodel Wonder Diet Experience'.

You exaggerate, surely.

Quite true, but you fail to mention (comprehend?) that during most of man's evolution we mainly died in the 25-40 year range (that's if we were lucky enough not to have been killed while our mother's gave birth to us, eaten by the local wildlife, avoid major injury, disease, the weather or basic starvation. By our 20's our teeth probably meant there were certain foods we couldn't eat, thus making finding food that much more difficult.
If you're happy to die before you're 40 then yeah, go to town on all the junk you want.

Good on your Gran. She sounds like like my Grand-dad. The old cat lived to be 95 and never went near a doctor. He drank in moderation, smoked a pipe occasionally and ate whole foods including red meat and dairy products. He was as fit as fuck right up until his body simply wore out and he died suddenly in his sleep as he would have wanted. He had an eye for the ladies too!

Re: Diet and Nutrition 'Experts'
Anyone (Rik Waller, Eric Pickles, that "expert" in the initial post above) can call themselves a "Nutritionist". "Dietician" is a more protected term, and a registered Dietician earns the moniker in a similar way to a registered nurse or doctor. In summary, I favour advice from the latter much more than the former.
I generally trust science, research and evidence-based findings. It has taught me that it is healthier to eat an apple than to eat chips. It is up to me to take that information on board, in the same way it's up to me to take the blame if I ever become a fat bastard.
