I know I sound like a TV commercial, but I went into Lidl today to give it a try and on a shop comprising of the usual stuff you buy in a week, but nor fresh meat or fish, the shop cost ?41.00 which I worked out was about ?30.00 cheaper than if I'd bought the stuff from the other big name crooks.
EG: Bacon at Sainsburys at ?3.23 Lidl ?1.75
10 Maxell -R DVD's at Sainsburys, (Don't ask!) Lidl: ?1.75
I reckon the big 3 are pricefixing, because the price differences between Lidl and the others is enourmous, not just a few pence here and there.
My handy hint is buy only your frsh meat/ fish/newspapers from the big names and buy the rest from Lidl, should save you about ?100 per month!

Jim
Haven?t you seen Lidl on your visits to Hungary then?
My sister, who live in Germany says they are a ?quality? supermarket there, and she does all her grocery shopping there.

Their newspaper selection is rubbish! Their own stuff is very good quality 'cos its German. They also don't store their fruit in fridges like the others, so a peach ripens properly, unlike a Tescos peach that looks ripe on the outside but never ripens properly on the inside. They do have them in Hungary and they are top class there especially to the Spar which are like a throw back to the Communist times, with possibly the most miserable and unhelpful staff you could find, this side of a Gulag!

So all that "Good food costs less at Sainsburys" is a big fat lie is it?
Lying bastards! I want my money back!

First of all, grand to see you back posting regularly.
Secondly can this tip re. Lidl be the first of a weekly or monthly series on how to save money in recessionary times? I am sure that those forumites who are brassic would appreciate a few such tips.
You could be porn's own Martyn Lewis.
Cheers

If you dont mind not buying the top brand names then lidl and aldi are perfectly fine for your shopping.
I use them for the special buys and special offers.
I have bought a flat screen monitor, bike clothing,mp3 player and many other items from them both.
somtimes depending that weeks special offer you need to be in early as somtimes the items fly off the shelves really quickly!

Cheers David. Problem is it is such ALOT of money you can save. The retail industry has managed to imprison the consumer by class, so a person who shops in Waitrose wouldn't be seen dead in Lidl, why? Because they perceive Lidl as being for the "working class". Likewise shoppers in Sainsburys and Tescos, feeling that they have an allegiance to those crooked bastards, but all the time being shafted!
We are so easily controlled in this country it's frightening!

Re: Jim
Lidl own brands are all very high quality, far superior than own brands of other retailers. You're right, Lidl is not seen as a "supermarket for pensioners" in Germany and the German consumer is probably more discerning than our lot.
I personally buy any meat and fish from Waitrose, never, if possible, from Tescos and sometimes from Sainsburys. Tesco are the biggest cheats of the lot, everything is substandard, I foolishly bought some "cheddar" last week from a Tesco Express and had to throw it away, it was disgusting, totally artificial and cost ?3.00! I also hate Jane Horrocks doing that stupid, "old loveable granny" voice on their ads.
If she actually represented the reality of Tescos she'd look like this:

Not so loveable now eh?
