Is Porn Historian in the Coalition?

Hi,
Forumites will have noted that Porn Historian recently suggested that the poor should pay more in tax. If they did that, PH argued that there would be more of an incentive for the poor to improve themselves and either get a better paid job or to get off the dole. Right PH?

PH's idea was trashed by some, including fervent Cleggie supporter, Sam Slater as I recall.

But hey, according to the independent Institute for Fiscal Studies which has done a comprehensive study of the impact of the coalition emergency budget, the Lib Dem Cons are pretty much following Porn Historian's advice!!!

The poor are not only paying more than the rich in proportion to their income - the standard statistical definition of being "regressive". But the poorest groups are paying more from their vastly smaller incomes than almost all the richest groups in actual cash terms. The IFS says its study found that the poorest six tenths of households lost more in cash terms as a result of the Budget measures than wealthier households in all but the richest 10 per cent. The report found that Osborne's tax and benefit changes between June 2010 and April 2014 will cost the poorest 10 per cent of households ?422.83. But those in the second richest 10 per cent would only find themselves ?339.12 worse off.

In the interests of "fairness", I should point out that the Institute for Fiscal Studies took into account not only tax changes but also benefit changes e.g. housing benefit in coming up with their figures.

However, the underlying figures align with the general approach "it's the rich that keeps the money, it's the poor wot takes the blame (and pays more dosh).

Indeed. As I understand it the government has said that only around 20% of the savings they claim are necessary will be made from taxation, the rest will come from cuts in benefits and public services. So even if, in strict financial terms, Treasury claims that the poorer members of our society will not be proportionately worse off is correct, the cuts will effect those on lower incomes far more than the rich.

I'm not a 'porn historian' fan by any means but calling him out this way, when you know 24 hours earlier he'd been warned by the mods, I find distasteful and opportunistic. Are you specifically trying to wind him up with the hopes of getting him banned?

This seems to me to be a bit of a silly riposte, but as you know I am biased. Of course I am not trying to get Porn Historian banned and there is nothing in my post which would do so. I certainly do not want to see him banned. I would have thought, on the contrary, PH might possibly be heartened that his suggestion appears to have been taken up by the Lib Dem Con coalition.

The point that I am making is that Porn Historian was arguing that the poor should pay more than the rich as an incentive for them to improve their job/pay/life opportunities. He got criticised by many including yourself for taking this view. However the detailed IFS report concludes that both in percentage terms and in actual amounts of dosh, some of the poorest members of society will be losing more from their "income" than those much richer as a result of the Lib Dem Con coalition budget. In overview this is what Porn Historian appears to want. I am merely highlighting the similarity.

I am comparing PH's views with the Coalition actions. Albeit in a jokey way, but that is it. However, I do think the underlying point I am making is valid. I have no interest in getting PH banned and have no idea why he might be!

I'll take your word that your motive wasn't to get him banned, but it still highlights how you were too busy patting yourself on the back for thinking up such funny title to notice that it might not be the best timing and you'd just come across as a bit of a nob.
