Re: Pakistan..yet more disgrace from this shit state..
It's more about the Taliban and their extremist views than Pakistan as a nation. It wouldn't be fair to pick out football hooligans, or BNP supporters, and use video clips of these groups to generalise about the British as a whole.
Of course, it's barbarism to the extreme what these people did to that girl and it's all too common in some places. But this, my friends, is capital punishment. Aren't some of you for that? Ok, the crimes committed that you want the death sentence for, as well as the method used to execute may differ, but it's essentially the same: someone being executed for what others see as a crime.

I take your point Sam, but there's a big difference between giving somebody a quick and relatively painless death and what they do. The result is the same but the method is totally different.
I believe in the death sentence but that does not mean that I want somebody to die a long painful death even though some murderers have inflicted these agonies on their victims.

I agree and pointed this out in my post. Methods for killing and crimes committed may differ, but the philosophy of killing 'defective' citizens is the same. It's a slippery slope.
Porn Historian thinks -1 life + -1 life = quits. If a life for a life is ok, is it then reasonable to say 1 long torturous death should mean 1 long torturous death for the killer, just to 'make it quits'? What if a killer rapes, tortures and murders 7 people? Do we rape, torture and murder the killer then bring him back to life another six times to do it all over again just to 'make it quits'? I know it sounds like I'm being frivolous but I'd really like to know. People that are for capital punishment for certain crimes commonly talk about prison not being punishment enough. Using their logic I can't see how a quick painless death makes up for a long, torturous killing.
Again, is this wish to bring back capital punishment more about a knee-jerk, emotive response to something that angers them rather than serious thought? I think it is.
Despite many on here right behind states executing certain criminals, still no one has come forward with a well thought out, reasonable excuse to bring back the death penalty. This barbarism by the Taliban is not the direction we should take society, no matter how small the step.

Sam, I had a young relative killed many years ago when he was run down by a bus.My relative was a child who had crossed a road on his bike. It was an accident pure and simple and I honestly feel sorry for the bus driver. I presume he has had a pretty bad time of it. Can you imagine his torment, "if only I'd waited another 10 seconds at the last stop" kind of thing. These things happen and I can accept that.
I find it hard to accept that an old age pensioner can be mugged and killed by some junkie simply because he knows that all he'll is get a few years inside.
I can even say that everybody can make a mistake, but, as has been proved time and time again, some of these types get out and commit similar crimes.
Put the fucker down ----- end of problem.
Mistakes can and always will happen and I know that the police can sometimes "fit" people up but I'd rather have somebody with "previous" put down.
A dog bites somebody and it's put down. It maybe was not the dogs fault, it might be his training, or maybe the dog is just bad. I know that there's a difference between a dog and a human, but bad is bad and I'm not aware of a cure.

Sorry to hear about your relative.
I don't think junkies kill old lady's because they know they'll only get a few years inside. The punishment for murder hardly affects the murder rate at all. Comparing murder rates for American states where they have the death penalty to states where they don't, there's no evidence of it being a deterrent.
Look here and you'll find that in actuality, it's usually the opposite. Comparing nations, it's much more muddled. On average, nations that do not have capital punishment have lower murder rates than countries that do have capital punishment. There are exceptions. For example, Japan has capital punishment but has one of the lowest murder rates in the world, while South Africa has one of the highest murder rates and abolished capital punishment. The obvious rule seems to be that culture and education have the greatest influence on murder rate, not the form of punishment.

Re: Pakistan..yet more disgrace from this shit state..
In the early 90s I spent nearly 4 months filming in Pakistan. It had never been high on my list of places to visit, even coming as I do from Bradford, but it remains probably the most interesting country I have shot in over the years. Working with a local crew and staying in less than palatial accommodation much of the time, I was treated to spectacular mountain ranges, huge glaciers, expansive deserts, ancient archaeological sites, teeming cities, remnants of the colonial past, friendly and welcoming people, and, it has to be said, a few hints of the sadness to come; the spread of the black flags of Shia Islam encroaching on the Ishmali areas of the Karakorams, the obvious overspending on the military, the lack of respect for the country's historical sites, and the low level of infrastructure repair/expenditure. A lot has gone wrong there over the years, no small amount of it due to the legacy we left in 1947, the cold war and so called 'war on terror' we and others have waged since the fall of communism, but I cannot accept Pakistan being described as a 'shit state'.
