Snap! The Tempest at Newcastle Theatre Royal. Derek Jacobi was the lead in a superb performance.

'I remember thinking at the time that something like this could actually happen. Nuclear weapons are assembled at Burghfield near Reading, all above ground and pretty much in view, so there would be no need for secret underground facilities really. As for storage, they are kept on RAF and RN bases, ready for deployment. Again no need for huge secret sites. I filmed at what was RAF Woodbridge some years after it ceased to be a USAF base, in the area that was used to store and arm the nuclear weapons they had. Presumably as the explosion if one was to go off would make it irrelevant whether the bomb was under ground or on the surface, the workshops and storage were all above ground. The compound was well protected, though only from outside interference.
'I know that some of the facilities where the Government would have relocated to and where people were supposed to go and live in the event of an attack have been revealed but not these huge secret facilities.'
There are large well documented underground facilities for conventional weapons at such places as Box Hill near Bath, which date from as long ago as the first world war. As for the existence of other 'huge secret facilities' not being revealed I would suggest that is because there aren't any.

There are apparently numerous huge sites in very remote locations that few people know about.
I went to Sellafield a few years ago on a tour, I couldn't believe how big the site was. You travel for ages from the outer permiter fence to the main facility and you can see former villages and hamlets within the zone that have been taken over.

Word had it back in the 1980's that there were many of them, although whether that was based on anything other than hearsay is hard to know.

I'm so glad you mentioned this scene because I remember discussing it with a guy were I worked at the time. I said I thought it was plain weird and possibly thrown in just to create controversy and generate extra publicity. He had daughters (albeit only kids back then) and thought it was perfectly normal for a father to kiss his recently deceased daughter's vibrator. I must be a prude after all.

Don't let George W Bush hear that or he'll be arranging an invasion of your daughter's bedroom.
