Obviously it is early doors but there appears to be a clear frontrunner.

This picture was taken at the end of February when the country's economic position was perfectly clear. The Lib Dems had been campaigning for this as a fundamental part of their political platform for years.

Obviously, there is still time for Nick, Danny, Vince etc. to vote against any proposed rise in student fees, or even to show some guts and resign, but I wouldn't hold your breath.
Cheers

"Don't let anyone tell you that this time it can't be different - it can. For example I got loads of votes from students based on the Lib Dems' pledge to oppose rises in student fees. But then when darling David offered me a government job. Well.....we had to quickly throw that pledge out in the coalition document. Hey, you win some, you lose some."

Who are those three on the left of the picture. Should they even be in this country? Do they have bombs strapped around their midriffs? I don't pay my taxes to allow foreigners to enjoy cheap housing at the expense of British people. I bet they've got 3 wives each and 20 kids all on benefits. Send them back to where they belong!!!

You can also tell from their expressions that they're openly boastful .. as if to say 'I'm clearly enjoying my time here at your expense. Ultimately my fiendish plan to really rub your nose in it is to represent the UK at sports. I think i'll start with England and work my way down'.

Thanks lads, totally agree. Apparently Cleggie rents them by the hour for photo ops to emphasise his all-inclusive approach to who he shafts.
PS. Can I depend on you to join my campaign to deport Andy Townsend to Connemara? I never liked his football analysis!

Folks,
can you please xplain how you would go about funding Universities with the none existent cash that is currently in abundance. University numbers have been going up year on year. Someone has to pay for them.
A more mature answer than 'make the bansk pay' would be appreciated.
Also do you not think this artificial modernist culture of 'send everyone to university' that has been sold to us has been done in a way that makes us think it is a good thing without actually taking account of the consequences.
I don't dispute that everyone should have the right to go, nor do I favour a system that only rewards those who are already favoured. BUT encouraging youngsters to think that the only way forward in life is to go and get a degree is wrong. I know sooooo many people with utterly useless degrees sitting in call centres. Whoopdeedoo we have the highest call centre educated employees in Europe. Fabulous. Lucky us.
I would like to see it getting back to me more merit based. I know that would mean alot of work to ensure that the system feeding the uni's becomes fairer but ultimatley the goal of having everyone walking around with a degree is ridiculous.
Look at nursing, now nursing requires a degree. Funny how they managed fine without for the past 100 years or so. Its just a whimsical fashion so politicians can boast oh look at our nurses they're degree trained don'tcha know, but when speaking to actual ward sisters who are banging their heads off walls because these students havn't got a clue when it comes to the actual practical application and can't change a dressing or refuse to wash someone becasue that wasn't mentioned in the finer details of the degree.

I don't think it's a post about higher education funding per se. Clegg's had one of the best educations money can buy. He's not so stupid as to be unaware of funding issues when he made his commitment, so why make the commitment and dishonour it ? I think that's more the point of the post.

Ah yes fair enough, well on that I can't disagree!
Although though we should by now be used to politicians making grand sweeping statements which they later retract in a ' ah um well when I said there will be free cake for all what I really meant was...' just to get our votes.
Bring back absolute monarchy I say, at least you know where you stand with them, usually on the exectutioners block

Hiya
"can you please xplain how you would go about funding Universities with the none existent cash that is currently in abundance. University numbers have been going up year on year. Someone has to pay for them"
Maybe the best people to ask are Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems who were arguing that there should be no increase in student fees and that instead they should be abolished. This was their line in April when they were obviously fully aware of the economic situation.
I suppose you could ask the same question re. government funding of anything e.g. nursery funding, school education etc etc. My understanding is that Lord Browne was given a steer by the current government as to what the parameters would be with regard to the extent of the funding provided by the state. What I have heard stated today was that the cuts in government funding to universities quoted to Browne were absolutely enormous - of the order of 80% in some cases. This is why Browne has had to propose removing entirely the cap on student fees.
So part of the answer to your question is that if the Lib Dem Cons had not taken the approach to ferociously cut government spending far and away above the levels being suggested by the City and a whole range of economists there would be no need to increase student fees to such an enormous extent.
You could argue, as the Lib Dems/Cons now do, that the people who get a degree on average earn over ?100K more than non-grads over their lifetime. Therefore, even if there were no fees, your average student based on these figures would pay for their course in terms of extra tax on income earned. However whether this situation will continue is very debatable which brings me to your second point.
"I don't dispute that everyone should have the right to go, nor do I favour a system that only rewards those who are already favoured. BUT encouraging youngsters to think that the only way forward in life is to go and get a degree is wrong."
I agree entirely with this point. The Labour aim of 50% of the population going to university to study academic courses is nonsensical. As far as I am aware the number of UK students with photographic degrees leaving college each year outnumbers the number of professional full time photographers currently working. This is madness in a scenario when you will now be expecting graduates to pay an average of ?30K+ back.
Cheers
