You still can't get it right, and if you like being called a racist cunt then I feel sorry for you.

Gurkhas

Post by David Johnson »

If it is the Gurkhas that you refer to, I just want to say that I had the privilege to travel to Nepal a couple of times for about 3 months or so each time.

Nepal is where the main recruiting areas for the Gurkhas are and the ones that I met always struck me as fine, hardworing people. The Gurkhas have fought in the British army for centuries. Many, about 50,000 have given their lives fighting for the British and Gurkhas have won many Victoria Crosses.

Personally, I do not have a problem with the Gurkhas being given the right of residency in the UK. All power to Joanna Lumley, she did a really good job at showing up Phil Woolas, the Labour minister for what he was a bumbling idiot.

Cheers

Yes, and 2nfro is on about 10,000, dunno where the bloke gets his numbers from, probably the same place as he learned his English.
However, having served with Gurkhas 10,000 here seems paltry and I would rather see 1M of them here then 1M illegals.

What you say wont be secret

Post by andy at handiwork »

A professor of international law at London Metropolitan University regards assurances about the confidentiality of the information that we all have to give are worthless. The law as it stands cannot prevent access to the data by the police, MI5/6, HMRC, and presumably the US authorities as Lockhead-Martin is subject to the Patriot Act, not merely for exceptional or substantive reasons but also for 'fishing' and 'trawling'. It would appear the only ones who wont be allowed to see it all is us, the people filling in the forms.

Picture the scene, those who are choosing a couple of years ago the company to run the census are deliberating whether it might be a good idea after all to award the contract to an American arms manufacturer, considering that such a decision might piss a lot of people off and result in a large number of false, spoilt or non-returns. 'Dont worry,' says the government guy, ' Those who object for genuine reasons of conscience or have understandable worries about the security of the data will be criminalised. That should cut down the number of trouble-makers'.

Why did nobody think that if the info is SO important, it might be best not to put needless obstacles in the way of collecting it by hiring Lockheed.

Bah....... The US government can find out more about a lot of people by hacking into facebook. It'd be quicker and cheaper too.
