Flawed arguement

Post by bogwort »

Ah the good old pseudo intellectual "there's no evidence of it being a deterrent"

If people went to the police and said they would murder someone but they didn't want to receive the death penalty, and these reports were recorded, this would be "proof" it was a deterrent.

However of course they don't.

What you mean is death row inmates and other murderers said they were not deterred by the death penalty.

Well thats fine because like ALL penalties the penalty itself (speeding fine, overdue library book fine, death penalty) is the punishment for those not deterred by it.

There is no "rule" re non/capital punishment and murder rates and you're trying to use data from an anti capital punishment site to justify your points.

I'll rephrase that: There's little evidence of it being a deterrent.
If people went to the police and said they would murder someone but they didn't want to receive the death penalty, and these reports were recorded, this would be "proof" it was a deterrent.
Proof of it being a deterrent for those individuals, yes. It doesn't happen, in my opinion, because:

1) 99% of people wouldn't murder others even if the law permitted it. (I know I wouldn't, would you?)

2) Most killers that do plan to murder someone assume they'll not get caught (so punishments don't even come into it).
What you mean is death row inmates and other murderers said they were not deterred by the death penalty.
No. If I'd have meant that, I would have said that.
There is no "rule" re non/capital punishment and murder rates and you're trying to use data from an anti capital punishment site to justify your points.
Did you just read what you wanted to? I think I did say the data re non/capital punishment was 'muddled' and I actually showed 2 nations (Japan and South Africa) that went against that article I linked to. I then went on to say that I thought culture and education had a much bigger affect on a nation's murder rate than whether it had capital punishment or not.

I used to spend a lot of time criticizing Islam on here in the noughties - but things are much better now.
