Old Alcohol

I've just found a new sealed bottle of Bells whiskey and and open but almost full bottle. They we bought at least 15 years ago !!!

I can't stand the stuff, it was my father's and got pushed right to the back of a cupboard and forgotten about.

Will either bottle have kept and still be like when bought, now be super strong or just awful.

Common sense says simply pour away but a waste if it is fine.

All advice will be appreciated.

It will be fine! As a (former) student I used to work in a pub that kept a bottle of 'Liverpool FC' whisky distilled following a competition triumph in the late fifties or early sixties. The odd scouse punter would happily part with a tenner for a small measure.

The secret with booze is to drink it as soon as it is opened so that it doesn't get a chance to go off. Having said that spirits should be ok once opened and a reasonable time taken in drinking it. Leave the top off and it will evaporate over time.
As for Bells whiskey I class that with Teachers and Johnny Walker as utter shyte.
The only good whiskey is a single malt. Only two blends stand out as drinkable on their own without adultering with lemonade or ginger or coke and they are Famous Grouse and Mackays. All other blends are for the masses who have no taste.
My personal favourite is Glenmorangie taken neat.
If this offends the whiskey mack brigade then I couldn't give a stuff.

And the funny thing about the quality end of whiskey is that the 'good stuff' doesn't seem to give you 'gut rot' the morning after if you drink a bit too much (not that I can afford to very often!)

You are correct Deano. I remember a terrible feeling once in Denhelder where me and two mates befriended 4 Dutch matelots and we all got pissed on Bells and something called Cutty Sark. Never seen it since. Boy, I wanted to die the next day. I had 5 shits that day and I still felt bad. As for Glenmorangie, I can imbibe copious amounts and feel well next morning.

It should be fine to drink and just because its been around for 15 years it cannot be classed as 15 years old, as wiskey only matures in an oak barrel...

As far as I know only if no oxygen gets in, and that depends on the quality and fitting of the cork. Cork stoppered bottles should be laid down so the the cork is kept wet by the wine. In good conditions there should be no reason why a wine shouldn't last that long.
