For those who have an aversion to capital punishment, here's the counter petition:

Interesting. I could have sworn that I saw on TV Lord Denning, when he was the Master of the Rolls, explaining why the sentance was passed as there was no other alternative then. I got the impression that he was the trial Judge, obviously incorrectly.

I agree with Rodders and Turan totally...with an added proviso.....first a
few facts - a) the re-examination of the Chrsitie-Evans case, led by the
emotive Ludovic Kennedy, did not prove the latter innocent, a common
mistake, as Turan and Rodders say, he was a killer (see The Two Killers
Of Rillington Place by John Eddowes). b) Ruth Ellis was a crime passionel
yet she clearly took away another human being`s right to live. It insults
the innocent and dead to hold their life so cheap that opponents of the
death penalty think it OK for murderers not to forfeit their existence. c)
an oft-overlooked fact of the Bentley case is that the officers on the roof
top fighting for their lives thought "Let them have it, Chris" was a signal
to fight on....even the tough judge, Lord Goddard, pointed this out, and
we will never know. The sad thing is Derek was not the one pulling the
trigger !
DNA would not have helped in that case or Ellis`s. But it could be a big
help in the future. Personally I would wish a return to full - not majority
verdicts - in murder cases, the crime to apply to only those who actually
commit the act of murder (not people like Derek Bentley), DNA testing,
a fair trial -and, if found guilty, then hang the swines !!
It is possible that a mistake still happens - I think very few under British
law in the past 100 years - but Society is run for the generality of people,
not the minority. It is a sad but inevitable fact.....And Jimbo, the last
hanging in Britain was not under 30 years ago, or even 40 years. It was
13th August 1964, almost 50 years ago.

So Frank you suggest to hang the odd "Innocent" is a price well worth paying? I wonder if you'd hold that view if it was you in the dock and the judge was wearing his black cap?

I think in recent years, under your blood thirsty and vengeful system I can think of 2 people who would have almost certainly hanged, Colin Stagg and Barry George, Jill Dando's apparent killer.

Would you, Frank Thring, been amongst these vigilantes outside Newgate prison, at their hangings, cheering and baying for their blood?

I expect when they were found innocent you and the "Hang 'em high brigade" would have declared, "Well, there's no smoke without fire, I AM sure they had something to do with the murders, so I'M GLAD THEY ARE DEAD!" In fact exactly what the hangers said after the "Guildford 4" and the, "Maguire 7"were released and the hangers were posed with the question, "Well, you bloodthirsty ghouls, what would have happened now, if they'd been hanged?" to which they more or less replied, "Well they were all fucking Irish, so they MUST have blood on their hands, so fucking what, THEY WERE GUILTY AND I KNOWS IT!"

Anyway, when all's said and done, Capital punishment simply doesn't work it just gives momentary vengeance to a few and pleasure to others.

I'm amazed at this thread.

It?s not that many decades ago that certain people would have been calling for capital punishment for ?pornographers?.

Well he was of an age where that was probably the thinking then, that the fuzz were omnipitent.
Oh how times have changed, and it is all of their own making.

You are so right! People who attend and contribute to this forum and are so ready to dish out death and destruction for all those who show human weakness, eg Amy Winehouse or those who are convicted of murder and found innocent, shock me as well.

As Mr Spider points out, there are many in society who would gladly have us all locked up or worse, for supporting the making and distribution of "pornographic filth". It's sad that so many on this forum are ready to grab the noose and light the flaming torch of the vigilante, ready to hang and burn, when they themselves are in the firing line of the so called, "Moral majority" that they ally themselves with.

This forum should be a haven for liberal and free thinking folk, instead it is a cauldron of rabid, righteous hatred and vengeful bile, that would make even the readers of the Daily Mail blush with surprise!
