Edit Function

Post by Secretease »

Any chance of an edit function on the board? Sometimes mistakes don't get spotted via Preview. Or is there a reason for not having it?

Cheers.

Agreed, badly needed, along with the ability for multi-computer awareness, so that threads don't show up as 'new' when I change computer and have previously read them.

(And an 'ignore' function would be cool, too!)

Although I appreciate we get all this for free, so can't seriously complain.

Perhaps also the possibility of deleting posts that one later regrets...

I suppose you could just edit the post to 'blank' to give you the same thing. I wouldn't like to see the ability to delete whole threads, (if you started the thread) as that tends to piss people off, deleting an entire thread because it isn't going your way shouldn't be allowed.

No I didn't mean that you should be able to delete threads. I meant you may have come home from the pub the worse for wear or in a foul mood after work and post something that is stupid/rude/ignorant and realise it makes you a look a dick and want to delete it before too many see it.

How do you edit the post to "blank"?

You can't, but the ability to edit your post would make it possible to delete all the text in it, effectively allowing you to delete it.

Of course, the edit ability in itself would be abused, it's a hard balancing act.

Guaranteed

I've been on 2 forums where the edit function was removed because people simply wouldnt stop abusing it

Everything from deleting everything they'd ever posted,
changing their post so the conversation no longer made sense
or generally being a tool used to get back at someone

Not hard to imagine a few here who would revel knowing they could change their posts to make their opponents look like fools

There's a forum I post to where there's a facility that allows you to edit your own posting, and only your own posting, for up to 15 mins after you made the posting.

That seems ideal because it gives you chance to correct your spelling or grammar etc.

There are some forums that stamp a "This post edited by [name] on [time & date]" which can't be removed, and some offer a field, 'reason for edit' to be filled in with "spelling correction" or whatever.

I've also noticed on some forums that quoted text doesn't change when the original text does, so that could be some small safeguard against certain people constantly altering history.

I'd just like a safeguard as I've come so close to publishing the wrong link a couple of times, and currently without anyway to stop the whole membership finding out who I bank with or which google search i've been doing.

Agreed. All the forums I use have a similar feature and it would be ideal. Something like 5 minutes to check and edit if needed and after then you can't change it.
