I have a bunch of RealPlayer movies (.rm and .ram files) that someone has given me. The thing is, I hate RealPlayer and won't install it on my pc. (The play quality is crap, installing it always seems to result in it becoming your default player, and every time you use it, it wants to connect to the RealPlayer site).
Is there a programme that will convert .rms to .mpegs, .avis or .movs?

Re: O/T Conversion programmes
In a word, No, if thier rm format you can only use real to play them, as far as I know, although I will bow to superior knowledge.
The thing with rm is, install it, dont fill in anything, never register, then, go into your PC,s regedit.rxe, and clear out all the real audio entries, this will stop it asking you to register etc, also right click on the taskbar and desktop icons
and delete them. When you want to play a file, it will still play but not as the default player. mail me if you need any help

Re: O/T Conversion programmes
Yes Joe, I have seen this program, but it,s messy and not 100%
reliable, especially if your a novice, Ifran-view also has a type of plug in converter, but who can be arsed! rm files are ok as long as you configure it right to suit you! not rm.I play
full screen rm files on a laptop no problem, and as long as the origional clip is compressed ok there fine.

Re: O/T Conversion programmes
or you can try:
How to use it
1 - Close all useless windows and run R7C
2 - Select the type of media you want to convert (Image+Sound,
Image only or Sound only) in Options
3 - Enter the URL and push 'Go'
* The URL type can be file://, http:// or rtsp://
* You can also drag&drop a .rm/.ram file on the window
4 - That's all!

Re: O/T Conversion programmes
Much obliged to you all.
Looked at the programme from Joe's link - way too complicated for a bear with as small a brain as mine.
Tried Ghostdog's recommendation - worked really well; unfortunately, it took ages to convert a file, then converted a 5.2mb .rm into a 586 mb .avi!
So, in the end I've gone for Lizard's option and it's worked fine. Still think it's a crap viewing format, but it's done the biz.
So again, thanks to all - hobknobs or Jaffa cakes with your tea, Lizard?

Re: O/T Conversion programmes
Incidentely keith, as well as real 6/7/8 versions
I was refering also to real player one, (the latest version,) it corrects a lot of streaming problems on older files. It too comes with a load of bulshit, but just ignore, definitely DONT register, and despite what it says turn cookies off in your browser security settings, and when it ask,s you which files you want to play ignore them all, apart from real of course!
disable the icons it places, and when it ask if you want to use as the default player "just say no", it really is quite slick
and plays older files with a spring in it,s step
