Am I missing something here? Menzies Campbell was never Lib Dem leader in a Westminster election.

Even if he was, the point I am making is that after a global financial recession hammered the UK and many countries in mainland Europe, there was a big movement away from centre and centre left parties. In the context of that movement, Clegg did well.

By losing seats? Okay by that yardstick Hull City won the FA Cup and Millwall the Premier League...

I have already answered the same question about three times in this section of the thread so there is nothing to be gained by my repeating the same answer re. the move rightward throughout Europe.

In theory, i.e. if you read the Lib Dems manifesto in 2010 they would be viewed as centre left. In their hopefully only spell in power they have bolstered up a right wing government so in actions they have been centre right.
