Rightly or wrongly what "celebrities" announce about themselves tends to be publicised. Angelina Jolie knows that.

When she announced that she had a double mastectomy following a gene test that according to the medical advice given gave her an 87% risk of breast cancer, the number of these gene tests taken by women doubled.

She had the humility to state that just because she did what she did, does not mean that her action was the only way to go. However, the gene test seems particularly valuable to women like her who have a history of breast cancer in the family.

To publicise the availability of this gene test is a good thing in itself so well done Angelina Jolie to talk about this so that as many women as possible can be aware of it.

Have to agree that raising awareness is good. Angelina probably has a few quid in the bank but I don't know how the NHS would tackle people with a percentage chance of disease. I presume such operations would not be cheap when you go private. I think most people would find a way to go private if needed.

She seems to be viewed by the media as being a star on an almost legendary level. Rather like how Princess Grace of Monaco was or Marilyn Monroe. I'm not sure why. She is just an actress, like Julia Roberts or Kate Winslet. Maybe she has powerful relations in the media.
