to presume further - any idea what will join the mpg files? Easy Joiner works fine for wmv and does join mpg - but the combined file doesn't play properly.

If you use Nero Burning, I believe you can drop all your scenes in queue and can be converted using a DVD-R (I am assuming they play separately).
Try it, it should be smooth enough.
