Guardaspalle

Post by jj »

.
Has anyone seen a Euro version of this? [I only have it on DVD as 'the
Bodyguard']. Kathy Marceau is clearly credited at the end [accompanied
by a pretty terrible photo] but doesn't seem to be in my copy.
According to this review there is a 'missing' scene with KM on a
yacht- has the film been chopped for the US market?

Iss OK- I can see the KM scene in a VHS boxcover I found.
The Americans woud probably cut the Mona Lisa down, to fit whatever
frame they happened to have lying around...........

The Americans aren't the only ones to cut movies to their specific needs.

Dutch Hafbo used to distribute the Buttman titles on VHS in The Netherlands (and Flanders) till Shiva/Night Trips took over in 1995. All Buttman titles from 1989 till 1995 were around 140 minutes. Hafbo only used 120 minutes tapes till 1992. So all their Buttman releases between 1989 and 1992 were under 120 minutes instead of around 120.

Still the Germans showed that they can go a bit further. Antana KG (XY Video) released Rocco Siffredi titles (also usually around 140 minutes) on 90 minutes tape.

There is of course Blue One, who prefers to cut some of their classis so they can squeeze three of them on a single disc.

Back on topic. I believe I have seen the Italian original of Il Guardaspalle, but I honestly don't rememeber anymore. The run time of the version I have seen, is 92 minutes. How does that compare to your version?

MUST remember in future to indicate, when tongue is firmly in cheek :- )
Buying Euro versions of US stuff usually entails a tedious check to ascertain
if it's the full version. Caveat emptor, and all that..........

Mine's about 78 min, IIRC, which would account nicely for the missing
scene.

You must remember you are dealing with a Belgian. We are widely known of lacking any sense of humor.

btw, we are in the middle of yet another long discussion in the IAFD admin forum on how to deal with different versions of the same title -- the Blue One DVD re-releases are being discussed as well as European versions of American movies. We seem to have this discussion every few months or so and every time we seem to end up with either no solution at all, or yet another unsatisfactory one. Perhaps that's why I reacted the tongue in cheeks remark the way I did. I'm in the middle of a serious discsussion about the topic and I guess it spilled over in this forum.

Well, it hadn't spilled over before, it now certainly has.

At least I could help you be a little bit more certain that you have an edited copy of Il Guardaspalle.

Magritte, Eddie Merckx, Edward Schillebeeckx, Anne of Cleves [wasn't
Flanders in Germany at the time, though?], Tintin, Poirot.... no, can't think
of any more [although I could name half a dozen famous- to me, at least-
Belgian ichthyologists]. Leopold II I exclude on the grounds that he was
infamous rather than famous.
Chips with Mayonnaise....that's covered all the stereotypes, I think

Although I used to frequent Belgo Centraal in the West End- I am quite
inordinately fond of mussels- oh, and beer. I think Belgium's great [especially
when compared to large swathes of Britain]- and if it's good enough for
Stephen Fry to flee to, it's good enough for me.

IAFD indicates that the film is 126 minutes long

I saw the American version of THE BODYGUARD (in VHS) in 1996 and it was 84 minutes long, so I really don't know what was cut.
A number of the Rocco Siffredi movies (some released through Evil Angel) have been cut and censored for Amerian release because of problematic scenes (golden showers).
Max Hardcore movies are severaly cut in the US, because of fisting g/s scenes but are released uncut in Europe.
Even in the 1970's and 1980's some American distributors would cut certain scenes from their own productions (showing trannies, g/s, fisting).
So cutting movies for domestic and foreign markets is really nothing new. It has been done and will continue to be so.
