but the female zebrafinches like it gaudy. And the "singing" of the males they find ever so sexy! - To me it sounds rather like rusty little ...don't know the word, the metal things to open and close doors

Little hinge-joints. Wanting badly to be greased. Very different from individual to individual but always recognizable as zebrafinch'es male song. Makes me laugh. But they are sweet, those little finches. I've written s.th. about them in different forums but not in English.
