I am not underestimating anything about Japanese society or their porn industry. I am quite aware the porn output is very impressive, and the content is much more varied and kinky than found elsewhere.
The point I was really trying to make is, I know that some male and on occasion even some female porn performers are flown in to Japan to participate in JAV movies. But they are made for the Japanese market and not intended for non-domestic distribution. I am also aware that occasionally some male and some female performers occasionally and sporadically go to the US to shoot movies there. But again it is strictly for the Japanese market. So while the Japanse use foreign performers for some of their movies, it is exceptionally rare (and perhaps someone can point out some titles) that Euro or american companies/directors go to Japan and make movies there for the Euro or USA market.
Around 1986 Traci Lords (before she go busted as a minor) went to Japan to shoot a movie there, and I assumed that the Japanese porn market was opening up to the west, but that early and rare effort seemed to have been quickly snuffed. I have no clue what happened to change that.

a remarkaby insular people..... and tradition- and the Yakuza!- are hard things to

Well, everyone who doesn't have a romantic image of Japan knows that they more or less control everything that falls outside the lives of ordinary and apathetic citizens.

Japanese people's attitudes towards foreigners are usually at extremes, ranging from fetishism to xenophobia. This necessarily determines the approaches of the porn industry as well.

I am not sure US porn producers and some of the colorful background they have are that fearful of the Japanese Yakuza or organized crime. Americans film just about everywhere these days (or in any event buy product produced overseas, natably in Eastern Europe and Brazil), and Private has been shooting porn around the world for ages.
Perhaps the problem is more cultural. It is very difficult if not impossible to frequent certain clubs in Japan, if you are a foreigner. They are very exclusive and xenophobic. Perhaps that is heavily ingrained to the porn community as well. In other words: foreigners are unwelcomed!
How an 18-year-old Traci Lords succeded when others could and have not is astonishing to say the least.

I found out that she had appeared in lots of JAV. Frankly, I'm not very much intrigued by younger generations of porn actresses and I don't know if she's the same girl at the IAFD. However, I know that American girls are usually presented in JAV with looks different than how they appear in American porn.
