Subtitles/ Dubbing?

Post by Ri0t »

Do European porn movies come with any type of subtitles (English, mainly)? Or any dubbing/audio options?

Italian, for example.

Modern ones [say, post-2005] usually give at least some audio options- but
it's very much dependent on studio/quality of production.
Before that, it's pot luck.

I have seen sub-titling in porn movies only rarely and when it occurs it is of
very short duration for some snatches of conversation.
Some gay titles produced in eastern Europe (Czech republic) occasionally have them.
Otherwise as JJ has indicated, if they are plot driven, they may sometimes have a foreign-language
audio track (Private movies) or are completely dubbed in the language where the movies has been exclusiovely
released (France, Germany, etc).
Foreign outfits who have international markets in mind will often concentrate in having
the cast speak in English (although not always that successfully).

I am not a purchaser or renter of recent euro movies, so I am not sure whether foreign or even US hc movies are being released
with subtitles. I would wager sub-titling a movie is not generally being done by any Euro or US company.

Many countries (France, Italy, German) are well geared for dubbing of mainstream movies. Some countries (especially Asian ones)
also release some art fare or big budget adventure movies. The US general moviegoer does not generally
like a foreign dubbed movie or even one with sub-titles. When a foreign movie
gains some critical/box office success overseas, the US distributors tend to just buy the rights
and re-make the movie with US actors and local settings.

To sub-title a movie takes time and effort. It requires good/excellent translators who are usually working from a detailed written script.
I doubt you will find a detailed script for the general porn movie being made. Let us say they spend the money to have some professional
sub-titles in one language, or even several. It costs additional money and effort to decide to hard-sub or soft sub. Either process adds to the release of the money (DVD authoring etc).
It is much easier to just put together some crappy dubbing (since the movie industry is
also geared for that) than sub-titling. And really when a sex scene goes on for 15-20
minutes what subtitling are you going to put there?
Like I said there is some brief subtitling I have seen of gay movies from eastern European countries like Czech Republic, where
the actors have no or poor command of English. So they record audio in their own native
language and just insert a few subtitles so you get the just of the "preliminaries" and relevant parts.

A certain number of Private movies have different language audio tracks as well as subtitles
(example: SEX SECRETS OF THE PAPARAZZI shot by Kovi in 2002).
If you carefully examine the DVD covers of these movies (usually back cover, at bottom
they indicate it by providing little pictures of the country flags).

You would need to examine very large and unobstructed box covers to better determine what
languages that are available.
