Directors like Mario Salieri

Post by hmir »

Hey guys,

New user here, so please forgive me if this question has been asked before.

I am a big fan of Salieri's work. Specifically the time period 1998.2002. I believe Monica Raccaforte was also active during this time. I love his style, the storylines, and the way the action is shot. One of the few directos that use missionary and lazy doggy (girl lying flat on her tummy) positions really effectively.

I have seen, most, if not all of his movies. I have also checked out Nicky Ranieri and Jenny Forte movies.

My question is are there other directors, Italian or otherwise, that i can check out?

I am also a huge fan of Monica Roccaforte and would love to see some suggestions in terms of actresses as well.

Thanks.

Salieri is something like Jesus Franco. You either like him or pretty much passionately dislike him.
I don't think there exists much middle ground for either individual.
On the positive side, many attractive porn actresses have worked for him.
While on the negative side, he has used many male stars that are NOT exactly well liked either
(Don Fernando, Ron Jeremy, Jakic, Valentino, etc) in both sex and non-sex roles. Not
to mention the number of old/repulsive farts that are ever present in his movies.
A lot of the sex seems forced and of a "non-consensual" nature, and probably turns off a lot of the
potential female audience (not to mention a section of the male audience that is not into that
kind of thing).
There also seems a certain undercurrent of anti-clericalism and war themes in his movies.
The camera work is usually static and scenes too underlit.
Having said this, one must give him credit for having elevated the much maligned Italian
porn industrry to such a high level at least from late 1980's to early 1990's.
I am not aware of any other director outside of his circle (the directors you mentioned) that
prodces the same/similar type of material.

My major gripe with the earlier Salieri stuff would be the brutal brevity of
the scenes - especially when contrasted with the often interminable waffle
about WWII, bent small-town politicos, the Mafia and the clergy.

Let's forget Salieri for a minute.

Can you suggest any other directors from Italy that are worth checking out?

Antonio Adamo early on as cinematographer and director, before he got artsy-farsy.
Max Bellocchio (who always annoyingly manages to get in front of the camera) probably
for the the more high budget Private "tropical" movies, for which he used a different porn name
Luca Damiano could on occasion turn out some interesting funny, spoofs, or costume dramas.
I am not really a great fan of D'Amato. Perhaps because he could not really
figure out whether he liked doing erotic mainstream dramas, sexploitation movies, and simply
just run of the mill porn movies (sometimes with foreign and american performers). I think he suffered
from the Jess Franco syndrome, that he was contimuously filming, without really
concentrating on making even one great porn of mainstream movie.

As long as your question doesn't mean: other directors who are like Salieri...
I can only speak to personal taste.
Andrea Nobili, for the lingerie and production-values [Notta proibita, Hot
Chic, etc.];
Susi Medusa Gottardi, for doing what she does very well [her non-Private
stuff is superior].
