They basically create a new dialup internet connection on your PC which usually dials into a premium rate line.
A bit like a normal dialup provider just a lot more expensive.
Plus when you click "Yes" you never know exactly what's being installed........

What about these sites that automaticly install a dialer without giving you a choice of clicking yes or no. Alec mentioned having problems removing one via add/remove programs.
What is Zone Alarm? And while we are on the subject what is Gator and how is it removed?

Ted,hopefully what Hornet has said,in short,is "avoid !"
Mind you,plenty of people were happy being fleeced by those
direct call premium rate no's.
And SOMEONE must actually buy something via a pop-up.

Gator is an agressive ad program that opens popup windows when you go to certain sites. It makes you think that the sites you are visiting are opening the popup when it isn't.
It can be annoying as hell if you've had it installed on your PC and you have no idea it's there.
There's a good program for getting rid of dialers and Gator ads called Ad-Aware.
It's free to download from
I'd recommend everyone to download and run it, you'll be suprised at how much crap it finds on your system and removes.

Ad-Aware didn't work on this particular dialler.
Zone Alarm is a firewall. Others are better placed to describe what it does, but it stops others from using your PC and connection remotely, quarantines suspect e-mail attachments and asks if you want a program to be allowed to access the net and remembers the answer. It even asks if you want to allow the likes of Explorer to access the net after you have first installed it. I installed it when I got broadband last week. Since then it has blocked 842 attempted intrusions, as it calls them.

Excellent recommendation. But, if you are running KaZaa or similar, don't delete the Cydoor references or it won't run.

One site I visited using a dialer is very insecure with regards to its dial-up connection, I accessed the site using my phoneline and kept the connection going for 30 secs or so, then physically disconnected the phoneline by pulling the socket out of the wall and the brioadband kept the site alive, surfed to my hearts content secure in the fact it wasn't costing me shedloads.
