IPTV

Post by Phil mCc »

Nice piece of press worth a look at by the professional outfits

It will never work this IPTV. Tell that to Decheu Telekom with their 80 million clients. And yes they will be on WMV same us us. Only difference is our box works today on any broadband connection in the world.

Phil,

Just out of interest. From what I understand, the IPTV "box" is similar to a set box a la Sky or Freeview (in the UK) and connects to the telly and broadband?

Is there, or is there likely to be, an IPTV card to install directly into a PC?

Cheers

Myson

Basically all PC's with a Windows Media centre will work, if you wanna get clever get a video card with DVi out on it and plug it to a Plasma or in my humble opinion a Sagem Axim which I think looks better...wham bam Hi-Def IPTV long before Sky Try.....
all the set-top is, is a very clever Web-browser, we have 3 working on our middle ware, two on display this Sat at Erotica (The Pub gig,)

I know mate The IPTV thats been around for 3 years is slightly different, It uses the broadband line to deliver Mpeg 2/4 this is just fancy cable like homechoice in UK. My idea of IPTV is WMV to TV using set-top boxes and because it can be delivered on any broadband connection it has more flexibility..2mb is perfect but many companies are offering 4/8/18/22 now so its easy to see where it will end up. BT have introduced Microsoft platform to their exchanges and are using a new system to combat contesion ratios and the story is it works....we launch first local channel today then planning starts for 40 more in UK and 75 from rest of world,,,I have been really surprised how slow the adult industry has been with all this as normally they lead the way. Still they get a chance to view on Sat at Erotica.

If you have a PC and a broadband connection, you already have IPTV. It's a new term for marketing people to play with. :)

video on a PC is old news we done that years ago, no one wants to watch porn on a PC or do the want to take it a PC into a bedroom the do it only because they have to...the key digits are "TV". IPTV is TV delivered over IP to TV, not aimed at PC. And that is new.
Porn is a very small part of IPTV the way it will deliver 1000,s of minority watched channels globally is the key to its promised success. Everyone knows the TV will become the PC soon not the other way around.

OK so now i'm getting confussed.
BT are telling me that via hard wire the fastest they can serve at is 4mb owing to the fact that 95% of exchanges are still on the copper system. To go faster than 4mb according to BT you need to go fibre optic which is curenlty being tested in London and will not have general UK roll out before 2015 and only then if the London test bed goes well.

So 8/18/22 sounds great and I for one want it but who is serving it?

BT are telling you porkers, you can get up to 24meg on copper, probably more but no-one has bothered to test it. Its not about the cable its about the exchanges and the cards in the racks. BT will be offering faster soon but they have been working on updating their exchanges, some of their resellers are offering 8meg now..85% of population should get broadband by 2007 in fact there is big Euro grants available to help we are dealing with3 one of which has 27million to instal it into 600000 homes. good old EEC money,

"some of their resellers are offering 8meg now"

I'm sure this is the case but I can't find anyone offering it without optical!
I have also spoken with Tiscali, Bulldog, etc who also claim 4 meg is about the ceiling with BT's current exchange's so some genuine links to nice fast mega meg broadband would be nice.
