I work in the Telecoms industry the facts are as follows;

In BT's network each subscriber uses a twisted copper pair back to the BT exchange, the speed that you get out of it is largely dependent on how far away from the exchange you are and the quality of the cable.

So on the current ADSL technologies you can be up to 5km from the exchange and get 2Mbs. There are a few operators offering 8Mbs but you will need to nearer the exchange and the exchange would need to have been unbundled by the operator (that is having their own kit at the BT exchange). Some operators have now started offering 22Mbs on ADSL2+. There is a technology called VDSL that supports 100Mbs but you need to be within a few hundred metres of the terminating equipment, so this won't work on the current BT network.

Well whatever rednose said was what BT, Tiscali, Bulldog and others told me this afternoon.

So it looks like unless you can see the BT exchange from your window 2/4mb may be about the limit unless you want to move to Londoan and get Fibre optic in your ?568,000 no bedroom non up non down off suite luxury apartment.

If you are in a cable TV area, 10Mbs will be available soon.

Try a search wanadoo , Bulldog, easynet to name a few. Rednose look at BT going Microsoft Enterprize and 2003 server,,,, look at LLUStream,
Why are BT planning a box themselves on H264....I have a IPTV WMV box and it has worked everywhere we have tried it. We are using Marconi for the exchange and line tests adsl2 is new technoligy and on a standard line using a different Router you should get around 11meg...its not cheap at about 200 quid for the install etc but like everything it will get faster and cheaper.
VDSL is to expensive at present but essential if you want faster out line 2meg or more,
Deuche Telekom have 80million people on there network and it is virtually the same as BT in set-up. We just came back from Belin looking at it and we have 2 companies from Germany here 23/25th everyone in the Telecom industry knows this works and it is happening now.

This is the future of all television and it is here now.

Worthy of saving is this has a list of the biggest suppliers...truth is they will all change in the next few months due to technoligy changes. BT are using new software/hardware that allows set-top boxes to be more efficient with routing. its like a priority program,
also use to test your line speeds,

Kim its the only answer, Imagine doing your next pub orgy live on pay per view....why do you think Sky do this. Because of the global audiance IPTV provides at a very cheap rate it will make every event a big money earner. We are planning to do events like the all Irish Shinty final..as a producer you will pay around 70p to deliver a better than DVD quality movie now if you charge 3 quid the punter is happy and its cheaper than a Pirate and he gets to support you direct/ no DVD no grief. I am sure you know what I mean.
When you see the demo on Sat it will blow you away,(which will be fun seing as its normally you doing the blowing,,ha ha)
