O/T-ish: Soho raids
O/T-ish: Soho raids
The Teletext news says there has been a series of police raids and arrests in Soho clip joints, etc. Also some mention of sackfulls of videos being taken away. Anyone know the details? I don't care if the ripoff joints are being turned over, but I hope the few reliable places for videos haven't been done.
Re: O/T-ish: Soho raids
these are 'near beer' joints rather than unlicensed sex shops, although there are probably behind the scenes connections.
Re: O/T-ish: Soho raids
They raided what are known as "Clip-Joints" where everything is promised on the door and then the punter gets a fancy drink costing an arm and a leg PLUS, service, tip and anything else they can think of amounting to a very hefty bill. He is then told in no uncertain terms that he HAS to pay.
The Vids are sold as extras and none of this has anything to do with licensed sex shops, strip clubs etc.
It has not happened before because the Old Bill were too busy chasing people for selling unlicensed videos etc.

Re: O/T-ish: Soho raids
Yes, this looks like an assault on genuine crooks rather than on the British public's freedom, so I don't think there's much for forumites to be concerned about in this particular instance.
It is however, unfortunate that the newspaper in question - like all cynical, manipulative, mainstream newspapers - should emphasis the 'sex' connection in a negative light. The average Joe would probably not be capable of reading between the lines and would take the thrust of the storey as a simple full-blown assault on the sex trade. He would then go on on to make unconscious assumptions - like, If it?s such a big operation and such a big story it must be a real big deal, it must be really SERIOUS. There must be something really bad about sex and strippers, call girls, porno videos, DVD?s etc. He would then unconsciously resolve to keep his own interest in sex to himself, so as to avoid being denounced as a perv. And if the subject were to arise in polite conversation or public debate, and not being over endowed with backbone, he would say what he thought he was expected to say - that it was all disgusting, dirty immoral, exploitative and that it should all be banned forthwith
Therein we have this nation's fucked up attitudes to sex.
Officer Dibble.

Yes, I agree with Dibble on this one.
Typical of the Standard to give the story such coverage. The headline which, for those who have not seen the paper, takes up about two thirds of the front page
'MASSIVE RAIDS ON SOHO SEX TRADERS'
gives the impression that, by now, half of Soho has been boarded up where in fact they raided three (illegal) establishments (all alledgedly linked to the same person/s) and arrested 12 (or was it 13 the Standard gives two dif figures within 3 paragraphs!!!) people. Many of who seem to be the girls working there who will have, probably, by now been released (or deported!).
Hardly a 'massive raid'
More ammunition for the 'anti porn ' brigade though.....
