DVD production and distribution

Hi All...

Have only been a member of the forum for a couple of weeks, but have already found it very very useful - so thanks to all...

Could anyone help me with the issue surrounding DVD production and distribution - I tried to get info from the people who issue the rating (i.e. 18, R18) etc, but found it very difficult to get the info I wanted.

My question basically is what are the legalities of selling DVDs that contain adult content from websites.

Also - I know there are other 'adult friendly' payment methods - but has anyone got around the issues (i.e no sexual content) with any of the major online payment providers such as paypal...???

Any help / guidance much appreciated and favour owed!!

Its against the law to sell via web-sites or any other form of mail order.

I thought there were levels involved. For example I could film a woman naked, put it on DVD and sell it I'm sure....

I thought it was all about levels of content...

Was hoping that someone would know from experience?? I'm not looking at hardcore/fetish etc DVDs? More basic sexual experiences.

From the BBFC Website:

The Video Recordings Act requires that all video works supplied in Britain must be classified by the body designated to perform this task, namely the British Board of Film Classification.....

As for R18, it can't be supplied anywhere other than in a Licenced Sex Shop. The supply of unclassified (and non-exempt) video works is a criminal offence.

So basically you can film what you like but to legally supply it in the UK, it must be classified by the BBFC and if given an R18 certificate, it can only legaly be sold in a licenced sex shop, 18 and below and you can supply legaly via a website.

That's great thanks - it's confirmation of what I thought it was.

I just need to find out what the limits of an 18 rated movie are - anyone know if there is a website out there with what would made a film R18 as opposed to 18 rated - I like the idea of selling an R18 via the licensed shops - but I also like the idea of selling a watered down 18 rated DVD direct - if the limitations aren't that extreme - i.e. no erect penis / no female insertion - would make a pretty boring movie...

Question2/ What about delivering what would be R18 content as streaming media? Does the server have to be overseas?

Question3/ Can a .co.uk be used (legally) for adult websites - I thought you couldn't, but have seen a couple of people on this forum using sites with adult content and .co.uk domains??

1. BBFC > Downloads > Guidelines

2. Neither the BBFC or Ofcom regulate the internet (yet) but if it's R18 strength don't call it R18 as Trading Standards don't like it. Of course you still have to comply with the Obscene Publications Act. You don't have to be overseas (just yet anyway).

3. .co.uk does not matter one bit
