Advice needed for website

Post by Karina Currie »

Hey guys
i've a question to put to you in a hope i can get some sense because i'm finding it difficult to get the info i need.
I'm thinking about relaunching my website but server space for adult content can be pricey or a pain in the arse, so i'm thinking of buying a server of my own.
i have found the place to buy the thing pre-installed harware-software etc but thats no good to me if i can't use it to run my site.
so what i need to know is
a) can i simply buy a server and publish porn to my chosen web address from home?
b) will i have to obtain a different internet connection for it or is my standard broadband ok?
and
c) are there any suggestions for good servers keeping in mind i would want to stream content as well as pictures?
any help at all would be much appreciated.
luv n hugs to all

I don't think you want to "buy" one Karina. You'd rent one together with its connection to the internet - which is the expensive bit.

Running a server is all about bandwidth and running one from home with more than one user connected would mean getting BT to fit you a fibre cable to your house. Not Cheap!

BT Business SDSL is ?500 connection fee and ?345 + VAT per month.

Hi Karina,
Yeah the guys are right - your server is largely irrelevant, it's the speed of the internet connection which is absolutely crucial. If you are only expecting to have a few members then no problem, run it from home. But I would imagine you are expecting quite a few members to join which means you need a BIG connection to be able to handle the demand. The best way to piss off your members is for them to take two hours to download one video.
My advice - forget about trying to host it yourself and just find a decent company who has a very large / fast connection to the internet and a pricing structure which is moveable depending on how your site grows.
Good luck!

P.S. Would love to book you for a shoot for my site - e-mail me on the above so we can discuss it! :-)
