Hi all,
I hope I'm not pissing windwards here, but do any of the producers here ever use an art department when they're shooting?
I don't mean a full set of designers, art directors, assistants and props guys; but do you put a lot of effort into changing your locations or studio sets to achieve that certain look you want? I guess I'm thinking of the more high-end films (Relish and the like) as opposed to off-the-cuff gonzo POV work, but I want to hear a range of opinions.
I'm asking this because I am an art department guy looking for work! I've worked on a few TV programmes now so I have the experience to see what looks good, where to source props and furniture and, if it's called for, build a set.
Yup, I'm freelance, so I'm promoting what skills I can offer! Such as an eye for a look and a really anal obsession with detail and continuity!
Cheers,
HD.

Re: Art director - testing the water
I think you'll find unless its someone of the calibre of Harmony or Relish no one has the budget for an art director. Well maybe Trevor Watson/ Tanya Hyde but Im sure he does all that himself
Try submitting that in a budget to a producer of a mid level production and theyd probably give you a dirty look.
Or laugh at you
Art director? Whats that? (Just kidding) Hell I dont think Ive even seen foleys or grips credited in a UK porn film. LOL
Im sure someone will come up and correct me though.

In days of old we would have such a person but now as Terry says there isn't enough in the modern gut wrenchingly tight budgets to warrant one. There ain't no money in porn anymore.

Thanks for the responses guys! All good, constructive stuff.
I'm sure every director loves having a helping hand... And I'm cheap! Okay, we all love money and want gainful employment, but because I'm new to all this and have only worked on a handful of programmes, I'm available for not very much. Petrol money would be nice though!
I want to expand and add to my CV, which involves doing any "art department" related stuff be it set construction, making a fake label, arranging furniture at a location or finding a cool looking dildo. It's all good.
