LOL. Nice honest comments. I know exactly what you mean. I just use my eye. I come from an illustration background so I can usually see composition right away.

Regards lenses, I wish I'd learned years ago how much difference a lens would make. I shoot using two lenses - a nikkor 50mm prime 1.4 which ekes out light when I'm traveling with minimal lighting and a 24-70mm.

I use the prime for close up work as it can be a bit soft and difficult when there's not much room.

The 24-70mm is a lens I first met in Tokyo. I nearly bought the Nikon version but I think Tigerr would have burst into tears at the thought of all those shoe dollars being spent on glass. So I bought the Sigma version, which still MADE me rush back to my ryokan and shoot Tigerr instead of going for dinner!

Ah Nikkor! - I hated their lenses! main reason I moved to Canon lol but that's a whole new debate.

Always best to splash the cash on the lens, camera bodies outdate every year but a good quality lens will outlast the body.

I have a 50mm Prime but too lazy to use it.

Yeah I shot Tigger years ago when she was known as Koko Li, she was fucking brilliant then so can only imagine how good she is now.

I actually started with a Canon many years ago but I prefer the Nikon bodies so it has to be either Nikkor or Sigma. But I know what you mean about Nikkor.

Yes the 50prime will keep you fit.

We go to Japan every year just to pick up on new ideas. You should go. The entire country is photogenic! It's really amazing. I never tire of it.

In fact we're moving to Japan for 6 months beginning next year. Previously we shot on a roof top in Tokyo in the eye of hurricane 'Man-Yi' with a crowd of office workers watching us from neighboring skyscrapers It was a shoot for SMSniper magazine so their lead photographer was also there watching over my shoulder, his videographer, the interpreter, the owner of the building, the assistants..cats dogs...jeez it was the most stressful shoot!

Anyway, you'll like it over there.

Well..shoot her again next time she's over. She can pick and choose who she works with now..but no need for any payment, just give her few picks for her blog. She just enjoys being in the front of cameras..as always.

Ah - I used to love the Canon top end bodies mainly because they are designed to shoot porn in my opinion. BUT I love my ?79 (?99 now - bloody currency rates) 50 mm Prime Nikkor lens so use my D700 more than the 1Ds. I was always under the opinion from both sides of the fence that it was the quality of the processing in Canon cameras that outshone Nikon bodies.. not the lenses. But hey each to their own. I will say I adore to death my D700 and have now set it up that I am shooting both RAW and JPG. Used to only shoot RAW. Simon you are right - when you got the lighting right and profiles right the JPG off the camera is superb.

Well enough arse licking. Got to edit a video of me and Ashleigh McKenzie next and no amount of editing will make me look good. Hahahahaha,
