Clever V. Stupid

Post by The Toybox »

Who's clever, and who's stupid?

A team of graduates?

A team of glamour girls including a Playboy model?

Or Rosie Bray, the BBC Wales producer who thinks there is a verb "to Vee" and has never heard of the word "versus"? :-p

PS - ten bonus points to anyone who can find pics of any of the girls with their bits out :-)

It depends if the question is about Eastenders and Corrie or real life situations.

Or someone who thinks a comma is necessary between "clever" and "and"?

I really don't think the producer does think there is a verb to vee - it's a common enough abbreviation for versus.

As the BBC continuity announcer says, "And next on BBC1 Arsenal v Manchester United on Match of the Day."

PS It really isn't that difficult to find pics of Coralie and Thekla with their bits out..so perhaps only 5 points...

I think that comma is correct, actually. It's two interrogative clauses separated by a conjunction. Though, I could be wrong....

Lol...And suddenly the level of debate on here has risen... who says this country is dumbing down?

According to Fowler's Modern English Usage: "Essentially, its role is to give detail to the structure of sentences, especially longer ones and to make their meaning clear."

It is a very short sentence and not at all ambiguous.

MODERN - that's the problem...dumbed down and lacking in grammatical rigour!

Clauses should be separated by commas. !grin!

Thanks, when I was getting my Honours degree in English Language and Literature (and from a real University too) I was told I could use the comma as I wished in order to phrase the sentence as desired - although I agree that dogmatic pre-war thinking tended to be that a comma is never necessary before "and".

A better class of debate though than the usual "whose husband is feeling poorly" drivel, and I'm sure they do in fact know best in Essex :-p

Now more importantly, has anybody found pictures of those girls' bits?
