Great Quicktime video editing software.

Post by Sharkmad »

For just over a month now I've been using video editing software by Daniusoft called Video Studio Express. I'm so pleased with what it does and how easy it is to use that I wanted to tell you all about it.

Obviously it's not for pro's, just for home users like myself. Before now I've paid ?40 quid for something from PC World, only to find it's so complicated I can't use it. In the last month I've done all the video editing I've wanted to do and havn't even read the instructions yet!

You can edit loads of different video formats, including mpeg, wmv, AVI, MP4, WMA plus loads I've never heard of. You can even import different formats and convert them to one single format. But quite importantly Quicktime, which can't (as far as I know) be edited in Windows Movie Maker. The other option being to buy Quicktime Pro, which is ?20 and according to the feedback on Apple's own website, is crap.

You can then also export the clips as one of many different formats. So a Quicktime file can be converted & saved as a WMV, AVI, mp4, mpeg etc. Also for iphone, ipad & ipod formats. Copes with HD too.

A screen shot of the software as you use it is below. Things are so obvious. The scissors are to cut the clips, the bin is to get rid of the bits you dont want. The tool symbol gives you options to adjust brightness and colour saturation (great if your vid is a funny colour because of the wrong lighting ie indoors). Then you can stitch the clips together with fade outs/ins.

It's available as a download and just takes a few minutes. With the UK VAT it comes out at about ?27. So have a look and feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Regards, John.

I'm impressed with Edius 6 from Grass Valley. I neded software that could import, export AVCHD footage and was wel;l impressed but ut costs considerably more at ?230 special offer.

I think its worth double that and it takes AVCHD HDV footage and anyhting else on the same timeline and chucks it out at the specs you want it

Its from the company that brought out Procoder 3 which I was disappointed didnt handle the colours very well on AVCHD.

Took a little getting used to in its usability but its easy enough when you know how

As I said, the one I suggested is great for the keen amateur, maybe semi-pro. Not many would want to pay that sort of money. Certainly works fine for getting stuff ready for my Adultwork page etc.

Another handy tip there... thanks for that.
My old spare camera was a sony handycam that outputted to AVCHD HDV and you're not wrong about the majority of software ballsing up things like colours... not to mention ruining the sound.
And as one who hates vegas (the software not the city) I was stuck with pinnacle.
I'm interested to look at Edius because I need something that can handle the QT videos that my new underwater camera does. I will try the one mentioned by Sharkmad but I suspect it won't output to HD... or will it?

Again thanks to both of you.

Hi Daz.
This is the list of supported formats. Don't know if that helps. I hav'nt got a HD camera, so can't try it.

Videos:
AVI, MP4, MPG, MPEG, VOB, 3GP, WMV, ASF, RM, RMVB, DPG, DAT, MOV, FLV, F4V, M4V, DVR-MS, M4V (not DRM protected), MKV, MOD, TOD, MTS, M2TS, TP, TRP, TS, AP3, AU, CUE, DV, NUT, H264

Audios:
AAC, AC3, APE, AIF, AIFF, AMR, AU, FLAC, M3U, M4A, MKA, MPA, MP2, MP3, OGG, RA, RAM, WAV, WMA.

Also when I click on the output box it brings up the list of available formats to make the file and AVI, mpeg, mp4, mov, wmv and a couple of others are there, with & without HD as an option.

Also more info in the clickable link below the screen picture on the original post.

Cheers. John.
