Paul Merson is hilarious...the way he cried when he admitted to cocaine, booze and gambling addictions and the way he left Boro because they "had no ambition" to join the mighty Villa and won bog-all.
I think you were meaning Paul MerTon.
Jim Davidson is a racist (based on his performances) and a drunk, who manages to appear on car finance adverts despite having lost his licence on numerous occasions.

The funniest thing that happened to that slag is when his wife, Caroline Quentin dumped him. Made me laugh, anyway.
She has far more talent than he can ever hope for.

Stop me if you've heard these two before:
Allegedly: the only remotely amusing thing David Baddiel has ever done was the History Today sketch with Rob Newman. But before they were famous they performed the sketch with a third actor present, and, according to legend, it was all his idea. After initially splitting, Newman & Baddiel later reformed , 'appropriated' the sketch, and found considerable success.
True: Like many funnymen, John Cleese has a reputation for not being able to take criticism. Early in the seventies, the columnist Richard Ingrams gave Fawlty Towers a good roasting in the press. During the second series of the show their is a scene where Cleese interrupts a man blowing up an inflatable doll. Earlier we had seen him checking in. His name? Mr Ingrams.

Probably the funniest person I have ever seen live was Julian Clary in the days before he made it on TV, when he did a one man show as The Joan Collins Fan Club with Fanny the Wonderdog.
It was absolutely brilliant, very adult and totally non PC.
He then made in on TV and presents Blankety Blank - talk about selling out to the other side. Now totally crap.
Cheers

julian clary's finest moment was undoubtedly, the 1993 comedy awards: "i've just been fisting norman lamont - talk about a red box!" (he was chancellor at the time). trashed his tv career for a couple of years but worth every lost sheckle, imo.
strange but true: i once spent a few unsettling minutes stuck in a lift with norman - he looked like a badger standing on it's hind legs. if i hadn't had my injection, i'd fully have expected to come down with a nasty dose of tb the next day.

Most comics when they are live on stage know that they can get away with murder & so are really funny.........it's when they switch to TV where things go wrong, they know they have to 'clean up' their act & hence forth it their act suffers!
I never found the Ali Gee program funny at all. It's odd that ever time he was nominated at the comdey awards he won nothing......perhaps rightly too! So overrated in my view!!
Spike Milligan in his heyday was one of the best.
