It was originally a B-side, then appeared on the album Hatful of Hollow (a collection of B-sides, alternative versions, etc) and consequently became so popular it was released as an A-side.

I have to say that in my opinion they are the best band in the world and would challenge anyone to name 3 bands that have had more influence on popular music since the mid 90s than the Smiths

You should get their 3 CD Set (1993 Virgin Records ltd)
Madness the Business
The definitive Singles Collection(69 of them)

As it says on the box

"This easy to keep collection covers all the singles and their b-sides plus as many rarities as we could find.Includes interviews with friends, relatives & managers

cheers

Influence is one thing. Genuine artistic merit another.
