I was laughing so much at this post that my wife ran into the study and asked if I was ok. She thought I was either having a heart attack or looking at porno websites again.

We ain't got any kids so maybe I'm biased but I fucking hate it. You summed it up superbly, Terry. And where does the money go ? Some of the Red Nose Day money (another waste of time) goes to councils and charities for 'diversity officers' or gay and lesbian co-ordinators'.

Do what I do - hit the pub. Mind you I do that every Friday night. Fuck 'em, fuck 'em all.

All well and good, I'm sure. And though it seems churlish to doubt its earnestness, I'm pretty certain it's the cloying 'Aunty Beeb' cosiness and sugary sentimentality of it that really drives many up the wall, to say nothing of the complacency and grinding apathy its constant fixture on the calendar could so easily induce. We know it's for a good cause, but does it always have to be the same bloody cause? I'm sure there are other domestic charities that would love a prime-time evening's worth of awareness and donations - ones perhaps suffering at the surfeit of public attention CIN receives. Homeless? elderly? the mentally infirm? But they would be difficult to apply the 'aah!' factor to, wouldn't they. Pudsey in a sleeping bag? with a walking frame? talking to himself loudly on a street corner? Why not?

(And the Jeremy Vine incident? Check your local paper for support groups).
