i use to have freebird on mp3...need to download it again cos it was totally unmemorable at the time....im sure the riff wasnt better than sweet home alabama.....im not someone who likes all these superb guitarists as their material tends to be lacking....for riffs id stick with soundgarden, metallica, nirvana (heheh:P), cream, sabbath, kinks, pantera, alice in chains, manics (first 3 albums) .....stuff like that are the proper riffs in my opinion - you cant really learn to write like that in the same way u can learn to do that complex stuff.......lets face is satriani etc may all be brilliant but teen spirit was just 4 chords and that changed music.....

true that Kurt used 4 chords, but most punk used 3 chords and THAT changed music. Where would bands like Nirvana be without punk?

For my money Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi is THE king of rock'n'roll riffs and a shit-hot solo player too. Pink Floyd's "The Wall" contains my favourite guitar solos, "Comfortably Numb" and "Another Brick In The Wall." Tony Iommi, David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, Clapton, Page, Peter Green, Brian May, The Edge........all phenomenal players!

i couldnt agree more with u ace , but as both of us are guitarists we both know that theres a difference between 3 random chords and the 3/4 chord sequences used by kurt. G C F A B E whatever three u like its all based around the song but no doubt punk was half of what nirvana was. no debate there :) i guess thats kinda why i loved green day , they used all the old chord sequences but made them sound so different somhow - all the new mtv punks just lack that ability. but to answer u properly....nirvana/punk/etc are a million miles from the overly complex guitarists :)

Aaaah..Rush! I personally prefer latter period Rush albums such as "Moving Pictures", "Grace Under Pressure", "Presto" and "Test For Echo." I thought Geddy Lee improved a lot as a singer as his voice matured. Neil Peart has to be one of the most amazing musicians on the face of the planet and to still be standing after what he's had to endure in recent years is testament to the man's spirit.

A mate bought me a ticket to see Rush last year in NYC and they were incredible and exhibited a much keener sense of humour onstage than I expected. On their records these guys play like musicians at the top of their game but see them live and you realise they play like they're from another planet!!!

Really? I thought it sounded pretty much like a contractual obligation album. Given the choice, I think flying...... just takes it from surfing......
