It wasn't really a con job Deuce. The release of the extended version had been well publicised in advance so any idiot who bought the "ordinary" version had only themselves to blame.

I bought the ordinary version and the first time I was aware of the extended edition was on the DVD

Maybe because I don't watch all the TV Specials,Movie Show Reviews or Read the papers I missed the forward advertising

Even given that if it was all above board why the months delay between the ordinary & the special editions?

By the third film they had all the editions released at the same time

I wonder why they changed the format

cheers

DVD is indeed a superb medium but am I the only person here who doesn't give a toss about all these extras?
I must have 70 odd DVD's including many with extra discs and I haven't watched a single minute of the extra stuff appart from maybe the deleted scenes - 99% of the time you realise why they were deleted.
I am quite happy to watch the film as it was originally released and I just don't get the point of viewing it again with the director and cast talking all over it
I've a brother who works in Thailand and he sends me all the latest DVD's which he buys for a pittance at the local markets. Not sure how official they are but they play just as well as any I buy here.

Advantages:

Watch when you like

High-quality picture and sound

Stop whenever you wish and able to go back to the "chapter" you stopped at

Not contributing to a certain reptilian Aussie/Brit/American's fortune by having Sky

Not bothered by having 26 popcorn eating, question-asking, braindead types sitting directly behind you and spoiling your enjoyment of the film

Often come with extras such as documentaries, interviews etc, and it's possible for the film nerds among us to watch the picture while listening to the commentary of the director/writers/stars, which produce some info you could live without but also amusing anecdotes and interesting insights

Disadvantages:

Can be expensive if you only want to watch a movie.

Conclusion:

I've used DVD to catch up with films I never got round to seeing at the cinema, or was late in having recommended to me by word of mouth. I have to disagree with you, David, about the modern cinema---there are some excellent films being made, but they tend to be below the radar of the multiplex mentality. True, those films would eventually show up on TV (terrestrial as well as the dingo-diddler's channels), but by then I might have forgotten about them.

Among the ones I've seen on DVD for the first time which I can recommend are Amelie, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Magnolia, Being John Malkovich, Donnie Darko, The Green Mile, Adaptation. You cannot just go to the flicks whenever you fancy sitting down to watch The Godfather or Lawrence Of Arabia, but with the high quality picture available through DVD you can watch them at home---and all you're missing is the huge screen.

Anyway, that's my view.
