"the orig 60s shows are on DVD now."

They are not as good. The ones I have seen are fairly standard sitcoms of a couple of young guys getting into scrapes. The genius of "Whatever happened to the Likely Lads" was to take Bob and Terry a few years on, and find out what had happened to them, and how they were coping with the fact that life never works out how you hoped it would, and how you have to deal with that fact. To do that in the format of a comedy is pure genius in my opinion.

I always found the theme tune massively depressing. The whole series was quite melancholy come to think of it.

I can imagine he was really under her thumb.

Clive James once memorably observed of "Whatever..." that Bob (Bewes), with his large featureless head, is the perfect visual counterpoint to Terry (Bolam), who has a large set of headless features.

An oddly unshakeable image, but a marvellous show all the same and like many a classic comedy drew on class issues in a manner today's comedic giants seem to have lost (or perhaps shy away from). Bob 'going up in the world' provided much of the comic tension, expertly milked by all concerned.

One of the best lines ever, when asked by Rodney for a beer, Terry replied: "I'd give you a can, but I've only got six". Class.

I still prefer when after a long night of playing cards in the caravan, Terry goes out side for a piss and they can all hear him slashing against the caravan and Thelma "pet" says "Its the only time all night I have known whats in his hand"

I for one still think its an ace film

Agreed not the best film ever but I've never forgotten that line
Defo pure class that one
