A sacked mine worker who says she was bullied and harassed when she refused to sign an Australian Workplace Agreement (AWA) has settled with her old employer at the Federal Court in Sydney.

Lorissa Stevens says Mining and Earthmoving Services tried to force her to sign an AWA under which workers would be fined $200 when they took sick leave without giving 12 hours' notice.

Today the company agreed to pay her legal costs and an undisclosed amount of compensation.

Ms Stevens says she is elated.

"I think that it's a big message for young people, just to go and prove that you know you don't have to sign these agreements, you can go and fight them," she said.

Her lawyer, Lisa Doust, says the case sets an important precedent.

"Stand on your digs in these circumstances when you're bullied, stand up for your rights," she said.

Ms Stevens has also filed an unfair dismissal case against the company.

Just a youngster(aged 21) being forced to tow the company policy who told them to stick it....12 hours notice of a sick day in advance is plain ridiculous & unreasonable IMHO
