Let's sort this argument out into catagories..
GRAPHICS:
While the tech guys will argue that the PS3 is graphically superior you'd be hard put to tell the difference on the same game running on two TVs next to each other. As many game reviewers have already mentioned. You'll get a slightly crisper picture with a PS3 using HDMI compared with an Xbox 360 with Component, but the difference is still marginal.
GAMES:
At the moment no contest. The 360 has some totally awesome titles out already, Obilvion, Halo 3, Gears Of War etc etc, and some amazing stuff coming very soon...Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed.
PRICE:
Lets look at this as if you just want a games console...
360 Core console. ?180 OK, you don't get a wireless remote and you have to buy a memory card (?10) and a set of Component leads for best picture quality (?15)...that is assuming you've got a HD TV.
So around ?200.
PS3 Minimum, about ?300.
HD DVD/BLUE RAY:
This is where it gets a bit complicated. You could say that it's good that the PS3 player comes complete with Blue Ray and bad that even the 360 Elite doesn't come with HD-DVD. On the other hand you could argue that with the PS3 you're forced to lash out more money for a Blue Ray player even if you don't want one. There's still a whole lot of people who are playing on CRT tellys for whom Hi-Def and Blue Ray is irrelevant. With the 360 you have the choice of whether to buy the add-on drive or not.
Playback quality of HD content:
The playback of HD-DVD on the 360 add-on is excellent. It is marred however by the sound of the main console's fans which can be a little intrusive. And also, unless you have the Elite model, you don't have an HDMI connection which gives the best HD results.
Playback of Blue Ray on the PS3 has been reviewed as good, also. And I believe it's a lot quieter.
BUT! If you're serious about HD movies, then I believe a stand-alone player of either format is the way to go. Expensive if you favour Blue-Ray, especially if you've already bought a PS3. But I had the 360 add-on drive and was generally happy with it, I decided to upgrade to a proper HD-DVD player (Tosh E1 ?180) and the difference is plain to see. And the bouns being the way it plays standard DVDs which is stunning to say the least.
AFTER SALES:
It's true that many of the first batch of 360's had problems. Mine packed up after about 6 months, but the service I got was absolutely top-notch. I was given a number to ring by the shop I got it from (which was not in India), they asked a couple of questions, then arranged for a courier to come round to my house house and pick up my console. It was back in working condition within a week. I know Microsoft's helpline is in India and agree that the info you get there is pretty rubbish (they told me you couldn't play US HD titles on the the add-on drive when you quite clearly can), but the repair hotline is still in the UK as far as I know....though I may be wrong about that.
As to Sony. Well they've not got a great rep for customer service....in fact the local shop where I bought my LCD TV from refuse to stock their products because of the problems with Sony's attitude. However i've no idea what their after-sales is like for the PS3, specifically.
Well if you're still reading, you've probably surmised i'm an Xbox 360 man! Yes it's had its problems, but as a games console for price, quality and quantity of games it can't be beaten....and with the graphical difference between it and the PS3 so small as to be of little importance, i've gotta says it's the 360 all the way.

The wiii looks interesting, ok its no were near as powerful as the box360 or PS3 but still a good console .
