That's a well-written article, and the Svengali analogy is a good one.
Maybe there are some cultural archetypes that we can't help becoming. Not so much as life imitating life, or history repeating itself, as perhaps an unconscious desire to become what we fear----or is that getting a wee bit too Olayish?
