Who, Googie Withers?
Sorry, I'm a bit confused with all this TV nostalgia.....

Steve, the "piss holes in the snow" line has been used a lot since, after having been made famous by the film. There is a another line that Jack utters: "you're a big man but you're out of shape". That has been used a lot since and was even the title (I think - certainly a lyric in a track anyway) of a song by the Britpop band "Sleeper" back in the 1990's.

I was serving my apprenticeship in the Shipyards at the time and one of the lads came in to work and said that they were making a film in Newcastle that day and needed extras for a pub scene - ?20 quid (a fortune to us then) plus all the beer you could drink, so we took off from work and headed down to the Long bar. We sat in there for ages drinking like fishes and then Michael Caine came in for his scene - I was so pissed I can't remember which one it was, but when it was over we just sat and drank some more. I was, we are all were, fucking hammered. A great day and my humble contribution to a great film, but the real star of the film was the city of Newcastle- by God it was fucking hard and grim then, much changed now and not necessarily for the better.

biffalo, that's impressive. I must say Newcastle has hugely changed. I've only been there twice - both times fairly recently - but it is way improved from the way it is depicted in the film.
