I walked along Whitehall the other day where Murphys have the road dug up installing a mass of information wires into the goverments buildings alongside the ones that are allready there, this can only mean one thing that the goverment will be collecting a lot more info on us all in the future !rant!

Load of bollocks to raise more revenue. This country is now completely fucked in the head under labour (not that it was or indeed will be any better under the tories).

For those playing politics and trying to blame the whole thing on to Labour, can you state how many Conservative MPs voted against the Identity Cards Bill when it was first introduced into Parliament?

To save anyone having to look it up, the answer is 10.
Which is less than the number of Labour MPs who voted against it, which was 19.
And also less than the number of Liberal Democrats, who ALL voted against it (52 of them at the time, I think).
As swampthing said: "does anyone think the tories will scrap it? i dont."

As Labour is or at least til this week has been, fully behind the scheme, they are a good place to start when it comes to blame. As for the Tories voting record on it I dont have any figures, except that it is Cameron's stated policy to get rid of the things asap. My local Tory MP for whom I have never voted has consistantly voted against ID cards. I feel so strongly about the issue that I might overcome 30+ years of increasingly misplaced loyalty to Labour and defect.

Its not just the amount of information it will have on it and who will be able to access it at launch, its the inevitable amount of 'creep' that will occur afterwards, so many organisations will be saying "It would be so much easier if this was included on the card" or "it would be so much easier if we could access the information on the card".
Rather like the terrorism act and RIPA, people have proved they can't be trusted to act responsibly with their powers, so they shouldn't have them.

We have need of you again, great king.

Yes, Cameron has so far stated that he is against ID cards in principle.

"ID cards will deliver real benefits to everyone, including increased protection against criminals, illegal immigrants and terrorists."
What nebulous twaddle. Mind you, I suppose they'll make identifying the bodies easier.

The best thing to do if they become compulsory is about 5-6 seconds in a standard microwave, which is what happened to the chip in my waste bin.
The chips aren't rad hardened and are rendered useless with no physical damage visible.
These b@stards are supposed to be OUR servants. Time to put them back in the box.
