Without getting into the philosophical question about what evil is, I think we can presume that to be so these parents would have found enjoyment out of their child's suffering and death. I don't think this is the case because why bother praying for their daughter's life?
Only someone who really believed in a God could do what they did so presumably they thought they were doing good. To commit any act, willingly, that you think benefits someone/thing in some way must be born of good intentions. If the act has the opposite affect on the supposed benefactor then the act is bad/evil but the intentions never were. I do not think people who do things with the intent of doing good are evil, no matter what the outcome of their actions; they could be wrong, but not evil.
Call the parents brain-washed; call them deluded; call them ignorant, but I think to call them evil is wrong, no matter how maddening and sad this case is.
This is why religion is becoming increasingly dangerous to our future; once it explained the unexplainable and gave comfort; once it provided a solid framework for society, but the more we advance in knowledge, understanding and ethics, the more it holds us back and conflicts with the modern world.
