The problem is that the system that now exsists dosent help who it was originally intended for the working person.
the level of poverty in this country has never been higher as the new poor are a recent development "the working poor" they make the mistake of working hard and trying to be decent members of society all but there isnt anyone intrested in their plight.
Of course if youre some scumbag who now is the offspring of a scumbag who has never worked the world is your oyster.
did you know you can get ingtrest few loans from the social? (bet you didnt) everyone has a lim it of about 1500? of course you have to be on the dole.

After everything the rich, successful, hard working bankers and money lenders have done to the country this past few years I'll take a few more chavs and dole scroungers thank you very much.
The people you're talking about may be a pest but no matter what country you live in or what economic system you have there will always be a small percentage of people who don't pull their weight in life. Give them less money and they'll just steal, which means paying more in taxes to pay coppers to chase them around and keep them in prisons.
Benefit cheats are no different to rich business men who wrangle the system so they save millions in tax every year. All the way up the ladder people will cheat systems for their own advantage, (think expenses for duck houses etc) but it's just easier to point fingers at the bottom rung cos it makes us feel better about ourselves.
I think a lot of it is depression and low self esteem. Having absolutely no ambition in life cannot be a good life, no matter how we think these people are living a life of riley. In their dreams at night I'm sure a lot would like a more honest, fulfilling existence but for one reason or another don't have the courage to change; since these people are mostly from poorer backgrounds anyway then maybe it's something the their classes psyche that hinders some peoples' confidence in life, or a fear of failure maybe? Who knows what reasons they have, good or not. I do think, though, that if it is a fear of failure, a lack of will or just a culture of reliance of handouts, I don't think demeaning them more and calling them names like 'scum' will jolt them into a more positive attitude.
We should be thanking our lucky stars that we're not like that. They can't have any pride in themselves which must be a horrible way to live. No wonder a cocktail of alcohol, frustration and violence seems to come hand in hand with such a lifestyle.

Hi
If you compare the estimated losses between benefit scroungers and corporate tax avoidance, there is no real competition. Every comparison I have seen seems to suggest that corporate tax avoidance (chavs in suits) is at least 10 times as much as potential losses through benefit fiddles.
Needless to say you hear much more about benefit scroungers than corporate tax avoidance in the vast majority of our media, primarily because its the likes of Murdoch that are avoiding tax payments.
Murdoch - corporate chav.
Cheers
D

Not a single penny is lost to tax avoidance, it was never due to be paid in the first place.

Sam,wise as ever but I do get angry when people go out to work full time, pay rent, tax,NI etc and live in not great flats when over the corridoor there are people who lie in bed all day...and I mean all day and get it paid for them.Where is the incentive in that?

Tax avoidance is tax evasion before they close the loophole. A crime in all but name. A way that corporates avoid tax which rightfully should be paid to the UK Treasury.
As Lillian Helmsley once said "Only the little people pay tax". And the key tactic of the UK media is largely to hammer the little people, working or non-working whilst they follow their morally corrupt policies.
The line between tax avoidance (not a crime) and tax evasion (a crome) is very narrow. A classic example on Panorama was the Lloyds TSB sales guy in the Channel Islands (a bank propped up by UK taxpayers money) explained to a millionaire how to avoid paying tax on his income by a highly suspect (in tax law) manouevre.
To paraphrase Thatcher - "tax avoiders are the enemy within"
