I been busy with other commitments...

ITs kinda hard to say if you would have Root or Not, since you say Virtual Dedicated Server, I dont know if you mean Virtual Private Server which is often shortened to VPS/VPN which would run on Fedora Core and IF that is what you mean, then Odds are pretty good you would have root, as Fedora uses like a Virtual PC, where you can edit your Conf, PHP.ini and everything else and its YOUR OWN version and has no effect on the other users, which is the objective.

So its possible, you would have root.

Now su is pretty powerful command, and not sure if it respects the borders of fedora VPS/VPN or not, as i know on a normal setup, su can edit and change ANY user, not just the one who logged in.

When u use the su command, it will ask for ur username and root password. then your good to go.

Have u asked GoDaddy if they will make the change for you ?

I might have to try that, all I got the last time from them was that the password after entering the su command is the same that i logged on with. It doesn't seem to be the case.
Once I get past that stage I have step by step instructions. Sadly I can't seem to log on!!!!!

Its something called Plesk that comes with the godaddy server. but the SSH terminal doesn't work, it just freezes. I have just managed to log into the server on putty but couldn't find how to open the file they said I needed to. I have emailed them to ask if they can do it for me. Whats the betting they say they can't!!!

Well u can use the locate program like


locate httpd.conf

which will tell u where it lives, then CD to the location like if it says

/etc/apache/httpd.conf

then type

cd etc
cd apache

then u are in the folder

I dunno what instruction they gave you, id be tempted to open it in a text editor then edit it, but i expect there are other ways.

Yeah they said edit it in a text editor thats what I'm not sure of but I never thought of using the old DOS commands like cd .. DOH!!

I think I may just give in !!! There doesn't seem to be anyway of opening the file they have suggested in a text editor. They suggested using a command vi then the etc/httpd/ and so on directory but all that happens is another cursor appears ready for another command.

do u have hve the path right ? as it should just scroll up the screen so u can edit it.

Open a Terminal window and switch to root access:

sudo su

Move to the Apache config directory:

cd /etc/httpd

If you want to make a duplicate of the httpd.conf file just in case something goes wrong

cp httpd.conf httpd.sav

Now carefully edit the Apache config file:

pico httpd.conf

or

vi httpd.conf

find the MaxClients line and edit it

Maybe that ve easier ?

Save the file, then you need to use

apachectl restart

to make them take effect
