Hi
Hope you don't mind me asking for help again. My site is down at the moment, apparently due to it being over its Max Client settings. My host says I can change them myself using SSH but I am not familiar with that. Also the control panel that allows me to launch SSH is also down!
Does anyone know if these settings can be changed using SmartFTP? I use Smart to change the settings on my forum.
Thanks
Neil O

Re: Help again!! Webmasters!
No you cannot edit this via ftp it must be via SSH and you must make sure you have root access.
You will need to edit the httpd.conf file but be very very careful as it is easy to change other parts of this file that can cause other errors on a reboot.
Are you on a dedicated server as I would be surprised if a host allows you to edit the httpd.conf file on a virtual host.
Anyway good luck!
Cheers

Hi I have a virtual dedicated server, it was the people at godaddy who advised me to use the SSH. Now it seems the whole thing is down, I can't even access the site via SmartFTP or SSH!
I am waiting for them to get back to me. Thanks for your help

If your on a VPN / VPS then your domain MAY go down, but you should still have an IP address which should still allow you access to the accounts control panel.
Its rather poor form for GoDaddy to simply say "Sorry Buddy, Do It YA FUCKING SELF", which is essentially what they have said.
Luckily its a reasonably easy edit to do,

Hi thanks , The site seems to be back now but I do need to make this change so wish me luck!! Sounds like I may need it!! They did send instructions and I do get 500GB of bandwidth and 10GB diskspace for $34,95 so I guess I get what I pay for !!!
Apologies to the BGAFD admin team for using the forum this way. I'll try to stop now!!

Personally, I'd rather pay more and get decent support. Unless you're an expert at squirting UNIX command lines into distant computers, cheapest is certainly not best.

Hi
Its www.godaddy.com, to be honest I have always been impressed with their service. I think my problem is that i have no knowledge of SSH, the one on my control panel isn't working and I have used putty.exe and I cant even tell if I am on my server! I am using the su command that godaddy told me to but I get a password request. They say that should be the same as the one i used to get on to the server but its not! So I am not sure if I am even connected to the server.!!!

I'm not an expert and I could be entirely wrong... but I think you need to have root access to use su and I don't think you get root access on a virtual dedicated server. Where's Cenobitez when you want him?
