Spanner young fella,
One thing that could be very useful and needn't cost you a penny and that's a reflector (very useful for bouncing natural light).
Just a 2'0" square of white polystyrene or very stiff (no, not that Storm you naughty girl !laugh!) white card.

I shall be going to WH smiths first thing in the morning !bow! !bow!- thanks for the kind tip sir - I also kinda heard on the tog grapevine somewhere that silver foil can also come in handy - any truth in that (wouldnt it be too shiny) ??

Yes, tin foil can also be used as a reflector but be aware. Tin foil will give a harsher reflected light than plain white card. This could cause bright "highlights" on the model (just like a mirror reflecting sunlight). Good if that's the effect you want but not good otherwise.
