Thoroughly recommend The Lives of John Lennon by Albert Goldman. To quote J.Burchill '...but beware. Contact with the truth can be fatal to your blind faith'.

Alright, here we go. In my humble opinion, the best rock biographies are (in no real order);
"Crazy Fron The Heat" - David Lee Roth. More a collection of stories, but a very funny collection. Roth did some fucked up shit back in the day.
"White Line Fever" - Lemmy. A god. Cracking book, couldn't put it down. Very opinionated as well.
"Hammer of the Gods" - already mentioned multiple times and rightly so.
"Walk This Way" - Aerosmith. Really candid, about all the drugs and the women. After reading this I genuinely couldn't believe the band were still together.
"KISS and Makeup" - Gene Simmons. His autobiography, a good read, lots of funny stories, but a real forum for bashing Ace and Peter too. Not good if you want to think of KISS as a happy band!
but the winner, hands down, is "The Dirt" - Motley Crue. The most fucked up book I have ever read. Smack, hookers, vehicular manslaughter, stealing clothes from homeless chicks and some of the best music of the glam/sleaze era, it's all here. I honestly can't recommend this book enough. It's subtitled "Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Band" and it really does live up to it. Read it immediately!

The Crue book is good reading, as is the Roth book, but its just a cash in on there bygone days with a 'Look at us, we're MASSIVE rock stars.
A good book with a brilliant title is John (Rotten) Lydon, 'No Blacks, Dogs or Irish'
