Absinthe - in 1792 in Neuch?tel, Switzerland, Dr. Pierre Ordinaire worked out a wormwood liqueur made with anise, melissa, and chamomile. Daniel-Henri Dubied along with Henri Louis Pernod bought the recipie and then opened the first absinthe distillery in Couvet, Switzerland, in 1797.

You give the Swiss too much credit.
The cuckoo clock is a German invention, it comes from the Black Forest.

isnt Sweden known for the highest suicide rate in the world? Maybe this is because life is too docile...

It really was an excellent film wasn't it. The lines about the cuckoo clock were, apparently, not in the film script. Orson Welles probably ad lib them. Carol Reed, the director, thought it so good he left it in the film.
