It would be nice to shift the blame on to a sub, but the ego of some of these writers ensures that no amount of arguing or reasoning will make a difference.

There was an anecdote in the Eye Street Of Shame a few months ago, where a sub had changed a star columnist's copy and was told, in no uncertain terms, by the editor, "People buy the paper to read his words not your subbing."

Worth bearing in mind, too, that quite often these "opinion pieces" are deliberately made opinionated in order to provoke a reaction.

Obviously this week was a slow one -newswise- and so Mr Self picked an easy target, that would hit a wide range of people and get them outraged.

We cannot know for sure that these are his real feelings -we'll see if this article goes up on his website- but we do know that it's lazy journalism.

Self is writing for the 'Evening Standard' which as we all know is a *paragon of accuracy and enlightened intellectual debate*.
